DEFENCE COUNCIL.
FINAL REPLY TO SPEAKER. "ALL OUT OF STEP BUT HIM." (By Tcleyraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Commenting on the remarks of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon. W. E. Barnard, concerning the Council of Defence, the Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, said that Mr. Lee and Mr. Barnard were co-opted to the council by Mr. Savage. After the personal attack on Mr. Savage in December last and the subsequent action taken by the Cabinet, the late Prime Minister considered it impossible to continue to hold meetings, but the work of the council was carried out by the Ministers directly associated with war activities meeting in frequent consultation with the chiefs of staff. Subsequent events amply justified the Prime Minister's action.
"1 propose," said Mr. Fraser, "to take no further serious notice of Mr. Barnard's statement, as apparently he is under the impression that everybody in the Labour party is out of step but himself."
