AT THE FRONT.
MOTHER'S VIEWPOINT. "N.Z. WOMAN'S WEEKLY." KNITTING FOR TODDLERS. The "New Zealand Woman's Weekly" has been fortunate in securing a series of articles by Sonia Vincent, the first newspaper woman allowed in the Army area, lrom the Lorraine front she brinjjs her personal account of things said and done, of the individual life of the soldiers from day to day, seen with a reporter's quick eye and felt with a woman's sensitive instinct. "What I wanted to do," she writes, "was to go to the front, as a wife or a mother, to see how the people were living, to know the sky, the countrvside, the villages. I wanted to hear from the lips of youiifr and old those lialfliidden, hnlf-formulated things which they would be too shy or too reticent to recount to a whole group of reporters." She has succeeded admirably, as readers of this week's issue of the magazine will undoubtedly ajrree. In view of the fact that Norwav is occupying such a prominent place in" the news of the day, the informative article written by the editress is of particular interest. Describing this game little northern country as a "stepchild of Mother Nature," she has attempted to show how the hardships suffered by the people have moulded the Norwegian character. The knitting designs this week will appeal to all mothers who like to clothe their children in hand-knitted woollies. There are three designs for them to choose from, as well as the usual six free patterns. The issue also contains the usual bright fiction, including two short stories and an instalment of the serial.
