HEAVY RAIN.
FIRST FALL FOR WEEKS. BRIGHT SPELL BREAKS. Contrary to all forecasts, rain which was at times at thunderstorm intensity, commenced in Auckland City and suburbs last niglit and continued for several hours. General reports indicate that the rain was experienced in like degree over the northern portion of the province, but that it was not so heavy and continuous to the immediate south. Recordings shows that ov;r an inch of rain fell in the city, between midnight and D a.m. It is the first heavy fall experienced sincc January, though in the past two months showery weekends have been fhc rule rather than the exception. Last night's rainfall comes after a spell of nearly three weeks of beautiful autumn weather, in which the humidity has been confined to occasional light showers and heavy dews at night after days of bright sunshine. In this period gardens and pastures, though not actually parched, have suffered a check in growth. Reports rrom various Nortli Island stations indicate that everywhere the conditions range from overcast and cloudy sky to light showers. Locally, the heavy rain cleared away the general cloudiness experienced yesterday afternoon, and has been followed by brighter conditions, though it augured the close of' the recent spell of bright weather.
