ORAKEI FESTIVAL.

MAORIS RAISE FUNDS. To raise funds for the war activities of the Red Cross Society a Maori festival was held at the Orakei native settlement at the week-end. The festival was arranged by Princess Te Puea, and the proceeds exceeded £12. The feature of the celebrations was the ceremonials which were carried out on Saturday on the arrival of Princess Te Puea and her party of 40 Maoris from the Waikato, and for this occasion most of the Orakei Maoris were in native costume. Special foods were cooked in a large Maori oven and these and flax kitbags and carvings were sought by the pakehu visitors. Yesterday nurses from the Red Cross Society were present to help with the festival. At a dance in the meeting house on Saturday night Judge F. O. V. Acheson, of the Native Land Court, congratulated the Maori community on the effort and appealed to them to keep in step with other sections of the community in the war effort.
