Mr. William West wood, who took up his duties as general secretary to the Constructors and Shipwrights Association on March 4, reveals a plan for the early mass production of merchantmen at unprecedented speed. Ships will lie built throughout Britain faster than the enemy can sink them. Each shipyard will build the typo of ship it is t)est fitted to produce most quickly and most economically.

TO THE PEERAGE. MR. O. C. TRYON ELEVATED. (Received 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, April 4. Major G. C. Tryon, formerly Post-niastcr-Gcncral, who has been appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in the new Cabinet, has been elevated to the peerage. Major George Clement Tryon is aged 08. His father was Viee-Admiral Sir G. Tryon and his mother a sister of the first Earl of Ancastcr. He was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. Taking a commission in the Grenadier Guards in 1890, he served in the South African war. In 1002 he left the army and devoted much of his time to travelling and studying political conditions in various countries. Eight years later he was elected Conservative M.P. for Brighton.

On tlie outbreak of the WorUl War he rejoined the Grenadier Guards, and, after active service until 1917, was appointed commandant of the London District School of Instruction, with the rank of major. In 1919 he became Under-Seeretary for Air. and afterwards held various positions in the Cabinet. An advocate of closer trade relations within the Empire, he hae travelled in all the Dominions. Hie wife is the seeoud daughter of the first Lord Swansea.
