EARLY START.
AUCKLAND RUGBY LEAGUE. PRELIMINARY SERIES TO-MORROW. The 1940 season of the Auckland Rugby League will be opened at Carlaw Park to-morrow afternoon, when eight senior teams will play a preliminary round. The opening is much earlier than usual, but, as many of the senior players hare been training for some weeks, added to the fact that a number of promising juniors will be given the opportunity to make good, there should be some interesting games. At least four Australian players will be seen in action, among them being F. Tottey, the well-known representative wing three-quarter, who recently arrived from Sydney. Tottey has not yet deeded for which club he will play.
In the principal game on Xo. 1 (rroun3 at Carlaw Park, Richmond plays Marist. The former has very strong talent to choose from in the lower grades, and, with niosfr of last year's thirteen available. Marist will find strong opposition. The curtain-raiser, between City and Manukau, should iprove an even game. Manukau is reported to have several good country backs. On Xo. 2 around, Mount Albert. last year's champion side, will be opposed by Newton, and in the curtain-raiser Poneonby plays Papakura. Teams selected: — RICHMOND ROVERS.—Furnrll.
