The Cinque Ports were originally ': Dover, Sandwich, Romney, Hythe, and I Hastings and to them were afterward! ; i added Winchelsea and Rye. They are (under the government of a Lord Warden, jl whose office was formerly an adjunct of the premiership. The Cinque Ports have j various privileges as to pilot ape. issuing ,|of writ*, and other judicial matters. I jThey are supposed to have been inoorI ,porated. previous to the Conquest, by 1 .1 Edward the Confessor. Their ancient ~'organisation was. however, broken up by _!the Municipal Reform Act. «nd a»-itui-lated to that of EnjrHt-h municipalities in peneral. The jurisdiction of the Lord i Warden ha* b*#n ourtaik-d and thm * office has become one of mere honorary ■t dignity, without anv emolument*, saving djthe right to live in Walmar Castle.
