PEMBROKE'S CHANGE. WHAT ABOUT PALMERSTON NORTH? A CENTENNIAL SUGGESTION. (By J.C.) The alteration of tlic ollicinl name of the township called Pembroke, on Lake Waiuka, was rd-cntl}- gazetted. The town name is now identical with that of the lake., which is as it should he. Waiiuka "ill bcconio a place of fame when the new road to the West Coast via Hanst Pass is completed. The alteration is timely, it will make for simplicity and convenience of travel, and it abolishes a most inappropriate and unfitting imported name, one no more justifiable than Palmerston North and Palmcrston South. How many New Zcalandirs or oversea travellers can say why those two absurdities were added" to ' the nomenclature of our country: Now the time has 'certainly come for the abolition of "P.N." and the substitution for it of the district name Manawatu. The. rcchristening would appropriately mark Centennial year, far | more appropriately than the usual rim of memorials. Here is an excellent II opportunity for a change that ha- long been urged. Those who are compelled at present to write the awkward English nnmo will undoubtedly give Manawatu their blessing. A common name for town — or rather city—river and district will save an immense lot of trouble. i Then, when the City of Manawatu is i placed on the map, Gisborne people may lat last take courage to wipe out "Poverty Bav" from their letter beadi ings and business addresses. At present, > in *pitc of nil the ridicule heaped on s their alleged '-Poverty,-; they B " ra . l ° . be in thr-ll to the £*%£*%£! ? Cook, who scarcely « esel,cs iu ilis i home the monument set up I honour.
