SPECTACULAR BLAZE.
Thousands Of Gallons Of Oil And PetroL MELBOURNE CONFLAGRATION. (Received 11 ».n».) MELBOURNE, this day. In one of the most spectacular fires seen in Melbourne for years, thousands of gallons of petrol, kerosene, crude oil and lubricating oil at the Vacuum Oil Company's depot at Spotswood railway siding, near the mouth of the Yarra, were lost late last night. Sabotage is suspected. Over 200 explosions were heard during the fire. Hundreds of police and military guards threw a cordon around the depot, and soldiers with fixed bayonets held back the crowd, which was estimated at 20,000, because of the danger of the flame* spreading to the huge, main contain***. The fuel destroyed was housed in galvanised iron sheds.
