The evident desire of the Nazis to portray "this petty, ill-directed raid on Scapa Flow as an important military affair," was described by Mr. Winston Churchill in the House of Commons as "significant and encouraging."
He was answering a question on defences of the naval base, saying the "defences of Scapa Flow and all naval bases are reviewed constantly in particular relation to the reeulte of enemy attack."
The First Lord added: "Wβ muet probably expect attacks of this kind to be a regular feature in the coming months, and we shall do our beet to resist them and return them."
Mr. Oliver Stanley, Secretary for War, in a speech eaid: "The Allies were fighting for the world and for a world in which nations might be safe even if they were small and a world where people might even be free to differ.
He referred to the practice that he now observed in foreign newepapere of describing the war ae "bogus and phoney," and said it wae easy from the ringside after a comfortable dinner to urge other people to hit and go on hitting each oilier.
The British were fi/jhting not for the entertainment of obher people, but for their livee. "We are going to fight in our way, not in their way," he added.
