IMPORTANT WORK
CONVENTION OPENS.
ACCOUNTANCY PROFESSION.
COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, thk day. At the opening of the Accountants' Convention to-day, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. liislop, said it was recognised that the accountancy profession worked very importantly for the. proper, safe and careful conduct of commercial and industrial activity. The importance of this work from a national viewpoint was increased by the outbreak of war. The progress of accountancy in New Zealand during the past 30 yeare, he said, was one of the outstanding events in commercial life.
An increase of 551 examined members during the past live years was quoted by the president, Mr.'W. R. Brown, of Dunedin, as a complete answer to any suggestion that the society was in any way a close corporation. Membership had increased by 139 in the past year and now stood at the record figure of 2870. This was testimony of the value, placed on membership by young men and women following a commercial career.
"It is quite definite that the examination standard set by the society must be maintained, and that under no circumstances could we agree to a lower standard to satisfy the demands of a disgruntled section who have failed to satisfy the examiners," he added.
The council decided to appoint a special committee to take any required action in connection with legislation in Which the profession was necessarily interested. It was agreed that the committee should act when advisable in cooperation with a similar committee of the New Zealand Law Society. It was complained that for many years past very important legislation had been rushed through Parliament before persons or organisations affected had a proper opportunity to study the bills.
