ONCE MINOR SENSATION.

uoHTxnro- LAori dak.

The Peter Gbecault mare given in the official race card as the dam of Lightning Lady, a brilliant Canterbury pacer,. Ie a mare named Lightnin', raced <with success by Mr. J. R. McKenzie, and eold for the modest kiwi of 12 guineas. Ligbtnin' was by Siftin from a mare by Honest Harry, and in 1925 she was much in the public eye.

At a Metropolitan Trotting Club's eummer meeting, Lightnin', ridden by F. G. Holmes, finished first in the Linwood Handicap, but (says the "Press") wae subsequently disqualified for the race after an appeal had gone to the New Zealand Trotting Association. The case was surrounded with rather unusual circumstances. Lightnin' had been nominated for the Linwood Handicap before racing at Forbury Park, and had there become ineligible for the race, which wae for 2.17 to 2.13 class horses. The committee of the Metropolitan Club, before the race, ruled Lightnin' as eligible, and confirmed its ruling after the protest had ibeen lodged by G. 6. Smith, rider of the second horse, Bellfashion. When the association allowed the appeal, the club was compelled to pay out two etakee—a rather costly race. Because of ti>3 good <performancee of lightning Lady, her dam is now eligible for nomination in the Stud Book.
