NATIONAL WORK.
PLUNKET SOCIETY APPEAL
SUM OF £3500 A YEAR WANTED.
Although the l Auckland » Plunket Society maintains in its area a staff of 17 nurses and has 23 rooms under its jurisdiction, the society, owing to shortage of funds, finds it impossible to respond to appeals to open roome in other districts. At the moment there is a deficiency of £1800 on the year's -working ,and unless the nnancWl * position improves there ie every possibility the eociety will have to curtail its activities instead of being able to increase them in response to calls being made. At present 85 per cent of the babiea born in the Auckland area come under the supervision of the eociety, and a further responsibility is being undertaken in caring for the babies of soldiers' wives. The Government subsidy amounts to only one-third of the amount required to be raised annually and to maintain the work it is now doing the society finds it necessary to raise by veluntary contributions £3500 a year. Because of the position at present the annual street appeal -will be made on Friday. Air. J. A. C. Allum, president of the society, said the work being done was of a national character. "The public hae never let lie down in the past and it ie to be hoped it gives its generous support now when the eociety most needs it," said Mr. Allum.
