Y.W.C.A.

EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME. PHYSICAL FITNESS FORTNIGHT. Last night, in the Y.W.C.A. gymnasium, the opening activity of the free physical fitness fortnight took place, and enthusiasm ran high throughout the evening. Attendances at all branches of the programme were very gratifying, but it is hoped that a still greater number of men and girls will avail themselves of the free tuition which is offered to them during this fortnight.

At 0 p.m. an elementary lesson in fencing was given to over 20 new pupils, none of whom had had any experience in this art before. Members of the Advanced Fencing Club are co-operating with the physical director in giving tuition to those who attend fencing classes, and by this means it is hoped that considerable advance will be made during the free fortnight. To-night members of the Auckland Swords Club are assisting members of the Advanced Y.W.C.A. Club in giving demonstration bouts and teaching those who are interested in learning fencing.

At 8 p.m. a folk dance party was held, with about 40 girls taking j>art. A wide programme of national dances was covered, and many people learnt what it is to have an evening full of activity. Most of those present had little previous knowledge of folk dancing, but they now have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of such dances as "The Butterfly,'' "The Durham Keel," "Circassian Circle," "The Steamboat," and other English country dances. At 6 p.m. a basketball tourney was held on the floodlit roof of the Y.W.C.A. building. This was well attended, many firnm sending along representative teems. The interest of many business firms in the city has been an encouraging feature in this form of activity. A buffet supper was served at the conclusion of the evening's activities.

DAISY CHAIN CLUB.

The president, Mrs. Lord, took the chair at the weekly meeting of the Daisy Chain Club. A successful "'bring and buy" was held, the proceed* of which go to the "Good Cheer Box" for helping sick members, the aged and the hospital. During the day novelty prizes were won by Mrs. Dando and Mrs. V. Hogg. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Smellie, Irwin, Newman and Wright, and the afternoon tea conveners were Mrs. R. Cairns, Mrs. L. Christie and Mrs. C. Wells.

COMING OF AGE.

About f0 guests attended a social evening given by Mr. and Mrs McEvoy to celebrate the coming of age of their son Phil Norton. Elocutionary items by Mr. H. Harvey, lightning sketches by Mr. Scott, piano accordion solos by Mr. Webber and Mr. Gillespie, and songs 'by Mr. Colley were included in the programme.
