The Senate Naval Affairs Committed tentatively approved a two years' construction programme of <>65,000,000 dollars, instead of the dollars' programme, spread over six years, as urged by Mr. Charles Edison, Assistant Secretary of the Navy. The new programme further cuts the 800,000,000 dollars two years' programme, as revised by Mr. Car) Vinson, chairman of the committee. • Mr. Vinson said the limited programme was all the Navy could build iin two years. The committee agreed I the limitation would not hamper naval expansion. The bill cuts the tonnage suggested lin Mr. Vinson's scheme from 218.000 tons to 167,000. The tonnage is distributed as follows: —.Aircraft carriers, Tft.ooo; cruisers. 66.500; submarines. 21,000.
The construction of aircraft was not altered.
