TYPING ERROR.

MINIMUM ROAD WIDTH. ROTORUA COUNCIL DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, this day. Some time ago the Rotorua Borough Council refused a request by the Housing Department that it should be permitted roadways of only 50 feet width through its new State housing block off Ranolf Avenue. The Department was then informed that the stipulated town planning width of 66 feet must be adhered to. However, owing to a typing error in the letter sent by the town clerk to the Department advising it of this decision, the width agreed upon was stated to be 60 feet. Acting on this information, the Department called tenders for roadways 60 feet wide. When the error was discovered the matter was referred again to the. council, and was discussed at last night's meeting.

The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, informed the council that he had since beeu assured by a competent official that a 60ft wide roadway would be in accordance with the town planning require ? <ments and would mean only that tho grass verges on each side of the road ' would be reduced by three feet each. In addition, the State houses would be set further back from the street line than was general.-

On these grounds the Mayor moved that the previous motion fixing the width at 66 feet be rescinded.

The matter was discussed at length, there being considerable opposition on the part of several councillors to rescinding the motion. It was pointed out that the Housing -Department was not entitled to special consideration which the council would not extend in ordinary subdivisions, and that if the motion was rescinded and a width of 60 feet permitted it would establish a dangerous precedent., The Mayor's motion was finally lost *>y five votes to four, and the Department will accordingly be asked to amend its tenders.
