RECENT SHARP ADVANCES. TAXATION AXD HIGHER COSTS. Petrol has now advanced Od in price on* both grade? in less than six months, I and of the present total, taxation absorbs 1/2] a gallon. The fir:-t sharp rise was in August, when 4rl brought the retail prices to 2/4 and 2/.> a gallon. J The Government, iit announcing the increase, stated that the expected additional revenue of £1,000,1)00 would be devoted wholly (o defence expenditure. Three months later, on October 23, representatives of oil companies announced an increase of Id a gallon, making the retail rates 2/fi and 2/4 a gallon. On December 21. prices rose another M. higher f.o.b. costs, freight and war ri-4: insurance being given as the reason.
