CANTERBURY'S GOOD LEAD IN DEFENCE OF WILDING SHIELD.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHIIISTCIIURCII, Friday. Canterbury's lawn tennis team made a good start in defence of the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield against Wellington to-day, finishing the day's play with live matches to one. Wellington's task tomorrow is accordingly a difficult one, but the team appears to have the ability to tight back. Wellington players performed so well In the doubles to-day that their indifferent singles form—they lost all four singles in straight sets—appeared far from a true measure of their capabilities. The matches to-day were played in hot, sunny weather, but a strong north-west wind, which grew in force as Iho afternoon advanced, made conditions difficult for players. Results arc as follow, Canterbury names first:—A. D. Brown beat D. G. France, G—2, ti—3; C. Angas bent X. V. Edwards, o—3, B—6; 11. A. Barnett beat R. McKcnzle, 6—o. 7—5; R. G. Pattinson beat R. Howp, (>—3, fi—-1: Brown and Angas beat Howe and McKenzie, 2—15, fi—2, (J —4 ; Barnett and Pnttinson lost to Edwards and France, I—6, 5—7.
