CONSCRIPTION ISSUE.
REFERENDUM PROBABLE. (Frtfm Our Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. Cabinet is taking no notice whatever of the various resolutions that have been passed in Taranaki recently by public awl local body meetings regarding conscription and when and if the question of conscription is to be decided it will probably be settled by a referendum of the people This information was gained by the Mayor of Stratford, Mr. Percy Thomson, during a visit to Wellington over the past two days as the Taranaki representative at the Wellington Centennial and other fixtures. During his visit. Mr. Thomson said, he saw the ActingPrime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, and the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, and mentioned to tliem the various resolutions that had been passed in Taranaki regarding the establishment of a national register and the introduction of conscription. "Mr. Fraser,;' Mr. Thomson - continued, "said Cabinet was taking no notice whatever of such resolutions. He said he appreciated what had been done in Taranaki to encourage voluntary enlistment, but -added that the question of conscription would probably be submitted to a referendum of the people."
