More than 20 (Jtago doctors huvul volunteered for service in New Zealand**)! first base aikl convalescent hospital-. The names of doctors from all over the Dominion have been forwarded to t!i« Xatioim 1 Emergency Committee in Wellington and this committee will select those who can be spared from civil lite in each town and district. Those selected will then be recommended to the! Arniv Department for service in the new hospital*. The hospitals will bo modern institutions and will be equipped by the New Zealand (iovermnont. It is probable that each will house 121X1 beds. They will oj ' staffed by New Zealand doctors and nibses. The nuinlier of volunteers from Dnnedin olotie totals 15, but it is extremely uubkely that all these volunteers will be allowed to 30 overseas. The first selection of volunteers will be made by the National Emergency Committee this week and those who rtt'O recommended for service overseas will lie advised (luring the next few clays. There id yet no indication as to when those selected by the Army Department will proceed overseas, but they will undergo training at Tre.itham in the near future. The strength of the medical profession in Otago, which at present stands at about 00, is likely to be considerably reduce«l in coming months through tho demands of military service.
