DROWNED IN RIVER.
TWO ORPHANAGE QIRLS. TRAGEDY IX INVERCARCHLL. (By T«Je*rsp&.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. Two girls were drowned !n the Apirima River at Rivevton early this afternoon. Thsy were:— Joyee Smith, agod 16, whoso parent* reside in Dunedin. Mary Csrbett, aged 16. A party of 12 girls from the St. Vincent Orphanage of the Dunedin Convent of Mercy, were spending a holiday at Riverton. The girls were drowned near a bridge on the main road at * point where a bathing pool shelves sharply. As ahe stepped into deep water when paddling, Joyco Smith seised the legs of a Riverton girl who was bathing. The latter shook herself free and tried to hold Joyce Smith, but she disappeared. The clothes of Mary Corbett were found on the bank and, although her movements were not seen, it is thought she went to the aeeistance of Joycc Smith and got into difflcultiei.
Joyce Smith's body mi recovered late this evening. That of Mary Oorbsts was located, but could not bo recovered this evening.
