NO IMMEDIATE RISE.
THE PRICE OF PETROL STATEMENT BY MINISTER. (From Our Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. An indication that there was not likely to be any immediate increase in the price of petrol was given to-day by the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. 6. Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan was asked in a telephone interview from Wellington about persistent rumours that it was intended to increase the price from next Monday by 1/ a gallon. "While I have not had an opportunity since my arrival back in Wellington this evening of discussing the question with my departmental officers," said Mr. Sullivan, "I can say that I have no knowledge of further expected increases* in the price at petrol. I must, however, make it plain that I can give no guarantee whatever that there will not be increases. Petrol is a world commodity priced on a world basis, and I do not need to say that the war will unquestionably influence the world price, but I can only repeat that at this moment I have no 'knowledge of any anticipated immediate increase."
