CHRISTMAS BOWLS

SECTION MATCHES.

First Round Results — Short's Early Success. Light showers held up the start of the Auckland Bowling Centre's annual tournament for ten minutes t-o-da.v, but play proceeded with litt/le interruption during the morning, and the firet round of the section play was completed early this afternoon. The greens of six city clubs are in use, and 66 rinks, representing 36 clubs, are engaged. The warm weather of the past week had speeded up most of the greens, but showers that fell during the night made some of the rinks heavy during die early heads. Keen interest was shown in the meeting between W. J. Short (Pukekohe) and E E Roberts (Carlton) at Onehunga. Short's nnk won the final last year in spectacular manner, taking over three hours to beat' Higgiiiibotham (Ponsonby). Roberts, formerly of Balmoral) had a strong team, and the game, which resulted in a win for Short by 18 to 15, was close throughout. They tied at five on the eleventh head, and on several other occasions the scores were level, but the game was really decided on the nineteenth head. Short was down four when lie went to the mat. He missed with his first shot, but picked up the jack with his second and trailed it" a couple of yards to lie 2 up. Roberts w-as unable t'o save, and Short drew another, to make 3 up With a useful lead he was able to play carefully for the last two heads. There was another interesting game at Remuera, when Higginbotham beat G. A. Deare (Carlton), the former champion skip of the Dominion, by 17—14. Scction play was continued this afternoon, and will be resumed to-morrow, when section A will play at Onehunga, section B at Balmoral, K?crion C at Mount Eden, section D at Ponsonby, section E at Auckland, and section F at Remuera.
