AUCKLAND TROTS.
SOUTHERNERS APPEAR.
BILL B. IN NICE ORDER.
TRAINING OPERATIONS.
Interest in the Auckland Trotting Club's Christmas meeting was accentuated this mornir.g by the appearance at Alexandra Park of a number of South Island horses with engagements at the fixture. Prominent among these were lcevus, Bill B bhadow Boy, Horsepower, Marlene, Houestus and Milestone. The Centennial Gold Cup candidates Icevus and Bill B. were closely scrutinised by local horsemen, and it was generally agreed that they are in excellent racing condition. Bill B. in particular impressed. Ihe trotter Milestone, who is engaged in the Rowe Memorial Handicap, to be iun on the first day, will be giving five seconds to come into the class if he does not win the Kelby Handicap run earlier i° n T , 1 , ,® aln 6 a § e A five-year-old by .Prank Worthy from Escapade, Milestone has two victories to his credit this season, and judged by the manner in which he worked under -restraint this morning he should race prominently here. «one of the southern visitors were hoppled, their trainers being content to jog around on the dirt.
All the serious training was done on the coui se proper, on which the poles were out 50ft, and the most impressive effort the novice, Cavalryman. Ihis bold-striding eon of Nobleman and Beverley Audubon was under a strong pull while covering a mile, and he was going well within himself in a final half-mile sprint in 1.7. This was the best of the morning.
r two Cup candidates Lawn Derby and Springfield Globe paid a compliment to odver Watch by keeping him companyover a mile and a half, which the trio covered in 3.41, the last half mile taking i u Australian horses put plenty of w T U>t ® their work > but th eir drivers, VV. J. O Shea and his son, were content not to make real time. No horse will strip in better condition than the champion, but his staible companion lightened up a bit on the trip across the Tasnian. Early workers were Lady Vasclyne (J. J. Kepnerley) and Three Bells (E. N. Kennerley), and they revelled in a two miles task, finishing on terms in 4.sß—the sprint home taking 1.9. A nice piece of work must be credited to Kewpies Bingen (L. Laver), Blue Crest (E. N. Kennerley) and Repose (J. J. Kennerley). They left the mile and a quarter in that order, and at six furJongß, t'he two first-named were two lengths clear. There was very little between the three of them half-way down the running, and they went past the post on terms after covering the last half-1 25 t '' s * ;ance taking 3.4
Equipoise (S. M. August), hoppled for the first time since he ran at Claudelande on December 2, covered a mile and a half in 3.59. He pulled up all right and if he stands up to his work during the next week should show up in a race. Cavalryman (I. . Morrison), Ringstone (W. Fleming) and Clay Pot (J. Paton) went away two seconds ahead of Task (W. McDonald); but they dawdled over the first mile, taking 2.40. The pace was then clapped on, and Cavalryman had a good deal in reserve' as he led. Clay Pot past the finishing poet in 3.47 for the mile and a half. It was an impressive effort on the part of the winner, but Ringstone, who went well on Tuesday, disappointed by tiring over the last furlong.
Petite Jewel (W. H. Andrews), looking in improved condition, was accompanied by Great Chum (S. M. August) over a mile and a quarter in 3.0, tlhe final sprint in 1.10. Petite Jewel is pacing more kindly than he did last season, and he should soon be in the money. Others to got through serviceable tasks were Chili Bean (C. M. Morrison), Star Guide - ; (J, J. Kennerley), Bournemouth (E. N. Kennerley), Isabelle Pointer (W. McDonald), Nawton Parrish (T. Roe), True Trusj (D. Cook), Amy win (J. J. Kennerly), Bronze King (E. N. Kennerley), Dick Redmond (A. Paton), Sequoia (Sammons), Bof4 Boy (J. Forgesson), Shadow Boy (Murdoch), Mandalay (D. O. Jones), Bingen's Best (J. Garnett), Elliotvale (I. Morrison) and Vanora (L. J. Mahoney).
The grass track will be available on both Saturday and Monday next.
