NAVY'S CHRISTMAS.
GIFTS FOR SERVICE MEN. LEAGUE COMMITTEE'S WORK. Parcels of Christmas comforts for officers and men serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve were distributed to-day by the Auckland branch of the Navy League. ■ The branch made up nine boxes con- 1 taining such delicacies as fruits, chocolates and nuts for naval reservists at headquarters, on examination work and at vital points. Each box was supplemented by presents from the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, which gave each officer and rating cigarettes, a book and writing equipment. The comforts were sent to the naval base to-day for distribution. The Navy League and the naval and mercantile marine requirements subcommittee of the Auckland Metropolitan Committee, which are working in cooperation, have given attention during tho war to every unit of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy and auxiliaries. Thirteen cases of goods, including 20,000 cigarettes, 600 books, chocolates and writing materials, of a tota lvalue of £140, were sent to H.MiS. Achilles last month. Cigarettes, chocolates and books have been distributed total value of £130, were sent to H.M.S. Philomel, and other gifts have been made to the trawlers of the minesweeping division, .md to tight units of the mercantile marine. Following the annual custom of the league, presents are now being sent to every child living at lighthouses on the northern coasts. All the gifts have been made by members of the girls' branch of the league.
