AMAZING ESCAPE.
OCCUPANTS OF CAR. LEVEL CROSSING SMASH. (From Our Correspondent.) PALMERSTON N., Thursday. A miraculous escape from tterious injury was experienced by Mr. R. U. Knight, fanner, of Longburn, at Longburn late this afternoon when the car he was driving was struck by a train. -Mr. Knijrbt was emerging from a side road on to the main highway, which necessitated crossing the railway line. He said he neither saw nor heard the approach <»f the train. The impact smashed the car to pieces, but all the driver suffered was a bruise on the leg. He had as a passenger, Miss Harding, who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Knight, and she was equally fortunate, suffering bruises only. The collision crippled the engine of the train, which had to be side-tracked and another obtained from Palmerston North.
