CRUISER ACHILLES.

RUMOUR OF HEAVY DAMAGE.

DENIAL BY MINISTER

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, Wednesday,

A denial of rumour that the NewZealand cruiser Achilles had been badly damaged in action with an enemy vessel was given to-day by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones. The Minister made it clear that no informa tion of that kind been received by the Government.

"I am surprised this rumour should have gained currency," the Minister said. "I have received no message of that kind, and it is only reasonable to expect that the Government or myself would be the first to be advised if "anything of that kind had happened. All I can say is that it is unfortunate thjt rumours of this kind should Ne spread."
