AUCKLAND WELCOME

LORD MAYOR OF SYDNEY.

SPIRIT OF ANZAC REAFFIRMED.

A warm welcome to the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Sir Norman Nock, who is paving a brief visit to New Zealand, was "accorded by representatives of Auckland local bodies gathered in the Municipal Chamber at the Town Hall vesterdav afternoon. Mr. A. S. Bailey, who presided, apologised for the" absence of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and the deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, who are in Wellington for the opening of the Centennial Exhibition.

In welcoming Sir Norman, Mr. Bailey said that the remarkable development and progress of Sydney caused a sense of pride, not only to the people of Australia, but also to the people of the Dominion. New Zealand appreciated what Australia had done to preserve the freedom of democracy that was the basis of the British Commonwealth of nations. They took the opportunity, if that were necessary, of reaffirming the friendship made immortal at Anzac.

Mr. Bailey added that they welcomed Sir Norman as the youngest Lord Mayor who had held office in Sydney.

Sir Norman expressed pleasure at meeting those interested in the welfare of Auckland, and the welfare of New Zealand generally. His visit was primarily one of pleasure, but he was also concerned with business interests. He regretted that he had been unable to bring the Lady Mayoress with him, but she was busy with patriotic work, and he hoped at a later date to bring her to New Zealand. He brought greetings from Sydney and wished New Zealand continued success.
