NURSES ON DUTY.

Willis, matriiii-iii -chief of tli<» Now Zealand Army Nursing Service, have increased considerably in the change-over from peace to war. The |>eace-time establishment of the Army Nursing Scrvice was matron-ill •chief. principal matron, four matrons, :i_J sisters and .'fit stall nurses. Since the outbreak of war, linwiuor, some hundreds of registered nurses have applied for enrolment.

These applications are eonsidered by the Nursing Council, consisting of the director of nursing services. Miss M. I. hainlde, the matron.in-chief and Miss Ranks, matron of the Palmerston North Hospital, as representative of public hospitals. From these application* nurses will l»e chosen as required for services at home or abroad.

Six nurses are already on duty at the camp hospital at Hopuhopu, five at Trentham and four at. Burnhani. In the event of nurses being sent overseas all will l>e given an opportunity to apply. When the Great War broke out Miss Willis one of tlie first New Zealand nurses to go overseas, first to Samoa and later to Egypt. England and France. Her services overseas extended from MM 4 to 101 S. She was matron of the Featherston camp hospital from 101S to 1910. and was appointed assistant inspector of hospitals for the Health Department in lf>2«. principal matron in 1921, and matron-in-ohief in 1U33.
