GAOL FOR OFFENDER.

Charged with assaulting a young girl and using indecent language, Cecil Brock Wales, a tailor's cutter, aged 51, apjK-ared in the dock at the Police Court to-day and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the first charge and convicted and discharged on the second. The police case stated that the complainant was a girl of 11 years of age. She had been crossing Grafton Bridge, when accused had stopped her and spoken to her. He had followed her and attempted to prevent her boarding a tram. Later, he had followed her out to Kingsland and tried to make an appointment with her. Tho girl, accompanied by a jwilice officer, had pointed Wale* oiit wlien he tried to speak to her on a second occasion. Taken to the poli<*e station, accused had admitted the offences. He had a previous conviction against him and had served a sentence. "ft is difficult to understand this typo of case," said Mr. K. C. Aekins, "for accused. "I admit tho language used was very had and if there was nothing to be said in extenuation it would be a case for prison. This man has, however, been examined and in view of the medical certificate I am putting in, which gives definite reasons why he should undergo medical treatment, I suggest the Court might take a leiitient view. He had had four bottles of beer that day and he is prepared to take out a prohibition order against himself." "Tho medical certificate docs not entitle mo to let him go,"' said tho magistrate. "What I must think of is the protection of young girls."
