THEFT OF £137.

MONEY FROM CHINESE MAORI WOMAN'S OFFENCE. REFORMATIVE DETENTION. Remarking that the accused had been treated leniently in the past, but that leniency did not seem to be of any great benefit, Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court this morning sentenced Matiera Brown, a full-blooded Maori, to 12 months' reformative detention. The prisoner had been convicted last week by a jury of the theft of £137 10/ from a Chinese, Lee Jung, in Myers Park. Mr. F. McCarthy, a pairing for the prisoner, admitted that she had a formidable list of convictions, but drew attention to the fact that the jury had acquitted her of the more serious charge of theft from the person. Counsel suggested that the Chinese complainant had made her the victim of temptation. Of the £137 10/ taken £131 had been recovered.
