BRITAIN AND FRANCE. AUCKLANDER'S IMPRESSIONS. Writing from' England on October 0, a former Auckland business man, Mr. F. S. Morton, describes, the methodical manner in which Great Britain and France prepared, for war. The armaments side in France was now legend, he said, but it was their agricultural preparations that had proved amazing. Wherever one went, and as far as could be seen, every acre that could he tilled was under cultivation, while the grain fields provided a picture that he would never forget. ""The French people took everything calmly," said Mr. Morton. "It was a"s though they had been expecting the call on a date that had already been mentioned to them long before. In Britain shelters are provided in plenty throughout the country, and where possible dugouts are to be seen in every backyard of private residences. Everything, including foodstuffs, has been dealt with in a remarkably successful manner, which will enable the country to throw its full strength into action 'when it is required."
