President Of Finland Says Will Defend Independence
DANISH KING HOPEFUL
(United l'resa AssuciiiUon.—Copyright.-—Ree. 11.30 a.m.) STOCKHOLM, October 19. The conference of the Heads of the Nordic States has ended and the delegates have dispersed. So far no statement has been issued. The four rulers broadcast from the castle of the King of Sweden. They stressed the importance of Nordic solidarity and the ardent hope that the northern States will be able to contribute to the re-establishment of peace.
Thje King of Denmark struck a note of hopefulness. Helped by the loyal co-operation of the northern States, the King of Norway hoped Scandinavian co-operation and friendship would be a model for the world.
The President of Finland, M. FCallio, said his country was determined to defend its independence, to which the Scandinavian countries' support had taken expression in action.
The conference again declared for neutrality in the present war and recalled the peace efforts of the Oslo Powers. It also afnrrned continuance of readiness to render any service for conciliation and declared that the Nordic nations would maintain traditional trade relations on all sides.
It was added that Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden would follow the same principles as those that operated -JXtt ' m,de '° Finknd '"
