FUTURE POLICY.
Will British And French Forces
Leave China? JAPANESE QUESTIONED. (Received 2 p.m. NEW YORK, October 17. The Shanghai correspondent of the "New York Times'' submitted a series of questions to high Japanese Army circles to which he received the following replies:—
What is the future policy of the Japanese Army to numerous American and other third Power missionaries in the interior of China?
New orders have recently been issued to commanders, especially to safeguard such and a bureau has been established to investigate the losses and arrange possible compensation.
What will be the Japanese reaction if an additional 10,000 American marines are ordered to Shanghai'!
We cannot see any reason to object to the reinforcement of marines should the United States deem it necessary for the maintenance of peace and order after the withdrawal of British and French forces. ,
This reply makes it' possible for American marines to take over defence sectors in the International Settlement a*t present held by British and French forces.
