Nazi Air Raids On Scapa Flow; One Plane In Flames
NO CASUALTIES REPORTED (United Press Association.—Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 1 7. r * Chamberlain, in the House of Commons, announced that an air raid took place at Scapa Flow at 10.30 a.m., about four machines participating. One was shot down in flames and another was probably damaged. Two bombs fell close to the Iron Duke, inflicting a certain amount of damage. There were no casualties.
Mr Chamberlain explained that the Iron Duke was a depot ship used for training purposes. She had been demilitarised and her armour plating removed.
The Admiralty later announced a second air raid on the Orkneys between 12.30 and 2.30 p.m. There were two formations numbering six and four aircraft respectively. No damage was done and there were no casualties. One raider was reported to have been destroyed.
