CITY MARKETS ACCOUNT.
MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. The order paper placed before the Auckland City Council at its meeting last evening was tlio lightest for «onm considerable time, and the business was quickly disposed of. The Mayor, Sir Krnest Davis, presided.
City Markets.—The 7iet revenue account of the city produce markets for tlie year 1038-39 revealed a loss of £302, compared with a profit of £."><>."> for the previous year, according to a report submitted by the city treasurer. Mr. T. \Y. M. Ashby. Mr. Ashby explained that the difference was almost wholly accounted for by the large additional expenditure in connection with roof repairs—nonrecurring charges. The reserves now stood at £23,484, as compared with £22.482 for March 31. 1938. The increase in the total rentals of the markets from £0318 to £0321, which became effective on April 2 last, would be reflected in next year's figures.
Omnibus Stand.—On the recommendation of the superintendent of traffic, Mr. Cecil Bland, it was decided that an additional stand for omnibuses be established on the western side of Symonds Street in the vicinity of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel. The stand is to provide accommodation for three buses.
Taxi Stand To Go. —Reporting 011 complaints concerning the unsatisfactory conditions 011 the taxi rank near the Civic Theatre, thie superintendent of traffic, Mr. Cecil Bland, recom-mended that the stand be closed. It was decided that the stand be abolished.
Plunket Society Plan.—Permission was granted the "St. Helier's Plunket Society to erect a small building 011 potrion of the council's depot at St. Helier's Bay.
Motor Races Circuit.—Reporting 011 a suggestion that a footpath should be constructed over part of the Centennial motor car and motor cycle road race cour-se in Massey and Riddell Roads, iamaki, the city engineer. Mr. J. Tvler. said that the cost of such an undertaking would be approximately £2000. On the recommendation of the works committee it was decided that 110 action be taken.
Street Cut-off.—The city engineer, Mr. J. lyler, reported that in connection with the plan to erect a new building at the corner of Queen and Welleslev Stieet<> he had been able to obtain an assurance from the firm concerned that there would be a cut-off on the lmildins of 4ft Shi on the Queen Street frontage and of sft lin on the Welleslev Street frontage.
Donation Made.—A donation of £."> 5/ was made towards the Labour Day celebrations, which will be held at the Domain 011 October 23.
