A fire among oil and paint stocks in G. E. Crane and Sons' warehouse adjacent to Circular Quay caused a heavy blanket of smoke over all parts of the city yesterday.
The outbreak gave nearly 100 firemen a worrying time. Several Were overcome by smoke. The fire originated in the basement, which had to be flooded with water from dozens of hoses. Several firemen, wearing snloke helmets, were compelled to swim through the flooded basement to reach safety.
