WELLINGTON CONFERENCES

SCHOOL COMMITTEES' VIEWS

Advantages and disadvantages of holding future conferences in Wellington during the Parliamentary session were dis closed tliis morning by- delegates it.ier.ding the sixth animal national conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees' Associations of New Zealand. Mr. W. H. Fortune presided.

Discussion in favour of the remit favouring Wellington as the venue, which was sponsored by Canterbury, pointed out that such a move would ensure finality on remits, following on discussion with the responsible Minister of the Crown. At present the Minister s replies were not discussed by conference until the following year. There was the additional advantage that no change of personnel would interfere.

Against the remit it was argued that the practice of holding the conference in different towns stimulated interest. It. was also over-optimistic to say that the Minister's replies would be received at the time.

After further discussion the remit was put to the meeting and lost. A further motion, that the federation conference should be held not later than mid-.Tuly next year, was passed.

Other remits approved included a request that the Department of Education arrange insurance free of cost to school committees to cover children at school sports or gatherings, whether iii or out of school grounds and during transport to and from school: the insurance cover to free the owner and/or driver from accident liability.

Sponsored by Manawatu and Orua, a remit urging that in all country schools, where possible', a septic tank system be installed, especially where school committers were prepared to assist with the est. was passed. This afternoon delegates were driven through outer Auckland and over the Centennial Drive. At Waiatarua they were the guests of the chairman of the Auckland Education Board. Mr. W. .T. Campbell, at afternoon tea. Further remits will be considered at this evening's session.
