THE AND PURCHASED AND WHAT WAS GIVEN-
In "The City of Auckland," written by Mr. John Barr, the City Librarian, there is a copy of the original Deed or paper which tells of the land transactions between the Maori people of Tamaki Isthmus and the pakeha. The chiefs mentioned in this Deed are Kawau, Tinana, Reweti Tamaki, and the white man ia Mr. George Clark, Protector of Aborigines, as he was then called. The witnesses to the signing were Major Thomas Ryan, Cajitain William Symonds, Mr. Edward Shortland and Mr. J. Coates. The land purchased is shown in the sketch and what was given for such land is also shown.
It seem* a very small amount for about 3000 acre* and which extended in the form of a triangle from Mount Eden (Maungawhau), Cox'a Creek

(Opou) and Hobson Bay (Mataharehare River, a creek at the foot of Brighton Road), yet in those days such articles were worth a great deal to the Maoris themselves. Again the land was in a very rough state. Sir Logan Campbell, when a young man and writing about the days of 1840, describes Auckland as "a sea of fern stretching as far as the eye could reach." Again you must remember that values change and few thought that in the years to come land in Queen Street, then just a stream called Ligar Canal, would be worth many pounds a foot and thousands of pounds for a building site. Other cities have in their early beginnings been bought for less. Think of New York and Sydney.
