Much good work has been done In the 7. Wans for the past ten years by Mr. Norman Mathesoi., of Ponsonby, and at the annual election officers of the Taknpuna Boating Club last month lie was elected an honorary life member, in recognition o\ his efforts on behalf of the Z class. Congratulations were, offered to Mr. .Matlieson oy Mr. J. .1. Maekay. who has co-operated with him for several years, also by Mr. f. McKnlght, who sai.l Mr. Matheson was looked on a» tnt father of the class. Mr. Wilkinson nlf*o congratulated Mr. Matheson and said that the Anniversary Regatta committee, the yacht anrl Motor Roat Association nnd the Tamakl l.'lub were always • pleased to have th* assistance of Mr. "Matheson for judging the races ot the Z class.

'1 lies,. efforts were successful. and each year there was keen competition for the honour of representing Manukau at t h<annual contests for the Cornwell Cup. I.ast season several boats were added by private purchase. and t lie club also sold their three to junior members at cost prico. less deprecia t ion. Tliis has further stimulated interest, and this year there will be double the usual number of V. boats competing in the Yacht Clubs races, while the Cruising Club has decided to support tlie class and place races on the programme at the club's regatta. In addition to the C'orinvell Cup. at which contest tile Mannkan Yaeht Club has been represented 14 times, but so far without winning it. (lie senior club also holds interclub Z races with the Ponsonbv and Takapuna clubs, and last year tlie Tamaki Club joined in. These are for Goodfellowsliip cups for senior members, and Harmony cups are contested annually by the juniors, so t lie club has done a Xrear ileal to foster the class on the western harbour, tlmnks to the practical interest of Mr. Arthur Md.eod. Mr. Norman Wilson, anil the present officers. At all Cormvell Clip contests the club has paid the expenses of the boys, a special Cornwcll Cup committee being set up each season to see to the finance. Next January the contest will lw» held at Wellington as part of the Centennial celebrations, and already the boys are getting their boats in good order. The finance committee has decided to hold a series of dances for the benefit of Cornwcll Cup funds. The tirst will lake place on Saturday, September 10.

It will be nn inter-liouse contest in the ; soft-goods trade. Nine firms will bo repre- I sented by two boats ea-ch. the 18 Frostbites starting in eaeh of the three races, i two on September 10, anil the final the ! following Saturday. The prizes. two ! trophiis presented by the Farmers' Trading! Company, Ltd., and Mr. Shaw, of Messrs. I Sargood. Son and Kwen. will be decided on a points system over the three races.

The following firms will hp represented by Iwo crews: Messrs. John f'ourt. Ltd.. Oeorge Court. 1.1 d.. Smith and raughcv. T.tiL. the Fanners. F.rookbanks. Milne and I'hoyce. r,t(!.. Russ ami (i lendining, SarSon ami Kwcii. Macky 1/ogan. All of the boats will be provided by members of the Wakatere Clnh. and they will be balloted for before the fir-;t race. The actual system of counting points has not been decided, but will probably be is for the first to finish, if ail start, and one less Cor each boat down the scale- quite a good system.

The Frostbites are open boats lift (Jin overall, carrying one sail, and are fast and handy for fairly sheltered waters. They originated in New Vork. where a club was formed to hold races in the winter. The name of the class at once hit popnlar fancy. and flic fleet is now counted by tin- hundred.
