KEEPING COOL.

MAN IN THE STREET.

ENGLAND RETAINS SANITY.

AUSTRALIAN IB IMPRESSED.

The way in which the average Englishman is "keepin'g: cool" "in the present period of strained international relations is deeply impressed on the mind, of Colonel the Hon. Harold Cohen, C.M.G., C.8.E., D.5.0., who arrived'in Auckland in the Rangitane to-day on his way homp to Victoria. Colonel Cohen is a well-known Melbourne solicitor and business man, a member of the State Legislative Assembly, and former 'Minister.

"In the midst of all these alarms and excursions, the ordinary man in the street in England is preserving his Sanity remarkably well," said Colonel Cohen, who arrived there early in the year. "To put it briefly, he is keeping cool. , At the same time, however, he is determined to see that Britain maintains her place among the nations of. the world. The way in which the recent conscription measures passed off without the slightest fuss is evidence of this."

Colonel Cohen had the experience of meeting a number of British and foreign statesmen and diplomats in London. He heard the Prime Minister, Mr. Chamberlain, make several statements on foreign affairs in the House of Commons, and also met him personally at a Downing Street Reception. His impression Was that Mr. Chamberlain was standing up well under the strain of the uncertain times through which Europe was .passing. Business .conditions seemed ■ favourable in Britain, he added, and unemployment was at a remarkably low level. He heard it said, in fact,' that' indications 'vi'ere that before, Ipng .there 1 would be difficulties in finding men to fill Vacancies in various spheres of industry.
