CHIMES WITHOUT BELLS.
An ingenious invention by a Munich bell founder is likely to cause great changes in bell ringing, henceforth joyous chimes may be produced by means of low-tension current acting on thin metal rods, emitting sounds as deep as the biggest bronze giants among bells. The mechanism of the instrument is surprisingly simple. A number of metal plates, smm. thick, suspended in a room, are gently struck by an electrically-con-trolled hammer. The resulting tones, tuned to a triad, are conducted through (isolated wooden sounding boards —one for {each of the three bell notes produced >|by the vibration of the slender metal ; rods. In them the notes are amplified 'and passed to a loud-speaker.
