DEATH FROM FALL.

GISBORNE INQUEST VERDICT.

STUMBLED OVER STEEP CLIFF,

GISBORNE, Wednesday,

An inquest was opened this morning concerning the death of Francis Charles Porter, aged 56, employed by the Public Works Department at Bartletts, on August 20. Thornley Calcott said his father-in-law walked with a bad limp as the result of a fractured leg when he fell from a racehorse in 192fi.

The evidence showed that deceased had been returning from a fishing expedition by a narrow track on Sunday afternoon. Charles Tee said that he was one of the search party and they found the bag Mr. Porter wag known to be carrying on the track at the top of the cliff. Aftor searching in the vicinity a set of false teeth was found in a pool of blood 100 ft below the track. A further search revealed the body 500 ft lower down. In witness' opinion deceased had remained on the ledge where the teeth were found for some time and then stumbled over in a dazed condition.

Constable Andrew said that when the body was found the base of deceased's skull was fractured, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
