GOLF AT ROTORUA

TOURNAMENT OPENS. I HUTCHISON ROUND IN 71. N.Z. CHAMPION* TAKES 74. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") ROTORUA, this day. The youth who stepped into the Rotorua open polf championship last year to write his name among a list of notable champions of an older and more experienced vintage is expected to be to the fore again in the popular tournament which commenced this morning with the qualifying play. Last year R. H. Glading, 19-year-old Hamilton player, defeated his 40-year-old senior, H. B. Lusk, winner of the title on three occasions—the first time back in 1928. Glading is on hand again this year, and so is Lusk. The youth has a number of his age to assist iiim in repelling the older hands, and one of them is the present New Zealand champion. Pax Smith; another is D. H. Graham (Wellington), who won the Xorth Island championship, at Easter, from Glading. *

Xaturally the winner is expected to come from this youthful trio, but there is always likely to 'be a surprise in 18hole matches. This was demonstrated last year when H. D. Brlnsden, than whom there is no more experienced match player in the Dominion, was beaten at the eighteenth, after being 2 up with five holes to play. Brinsden to-day was playing with Smith and Graham, the field going off in threes, while Glading was in the trio behind. After heavy rain yesterday, which caused the course to be closed for morning play, the tournament commenced at 8 o'clock this morning in beautiful spring conditions. . The best of the earlier cards in the first qualifying ■ round were:— F. C. Hutchison (Wanganui) 71 •T. E. Stedman (Maungakiekie) .. 72 P. G. F. Smith (Akarana) 74 R. C. Smith (Rotorua) 74 C.
