ONEHUNGA LOANS.
RATEPAYERS CONCERNED. SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING. In order to discuss the question of applying to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to take a poll of ratepayers to borrow £20,000 for tarsealing work and £8000 for a swimming bath on a site to cost £750, a special meeting of the Onebunga Borough Council will be held this evening. Two petitions have been circulated in the borough, one asking the council to call a meeting of ratepayers to discuss the loan proposals, and another objecting to any loan being raised without the consent of the ratepayers. The Mayor, Mr. A. Garside, has stated that the council would honour a pledge made during the election campaign not to borrow money contrary to the wishes of the ratepayers. There was a third proposal to borrow £15,100 for waterworks extension. He gave an assurance that on each of the issues a poll of ratepayers would be taken should the statutory permission be given -by the Local Government Loans Board. The council will decide to-night whether the on the petitions constitute actual objections to the loans! and whether they *hould be forwarded to the Loans Board.
