U.S.A. TENNIS DOUBLES.
AUSTRAUAN SENSATION. TROUBLE OVER DAVIS CUP COACH. BOSTON, August 17. The American tenuis doubles championship was continued on Wednesday, three of the quarter-finals resulting: * Parker and McNeill beat Boljbitt and Guernsey, 6—L 10—8, 6—2 ; Kiggs and Cooke beat Peacock and Imhoff, 6—4, G —3. «>—l : Quist and Bromwich beat Mako and Tidball, 6—2, U—l. «—2.
The appointment of Bruce Barnes as coach of the American Davis Cup team is criticised by the New York Press. The complaint is made that while the Australians have snapped up two of the country's most brilliant. strategists in Vincent Richards and George Lott, the American Lawn Tennis Association has passed over good men for "a fair to middling Texas amateur, who never made the cup team, and has not shown any gift as a DrofessionaL" The constant rebuffing of Tilden's and Vine's offers to act u I coaches is also the subject of criticism.
A prominent comments tor. Bob Considine. states that the United States 75.000 dollars until the appearance of Donald Budge in trying to win back the cup. He is of the opinion that America is in extreme danger of losing the trophy to Australia for a decade and will face an expenditure of 200,000 dollars to regain it.
Among those who saw the sensational victory of the Australians .was the United States Davis Cup captain. Walter Pate, and Mr. Holcombe Ward, president of the U.S.A. Lawn Tennis Association, who agaia emphasised the likelihood of Australia capturing the Davis Cup.
