SNAPSHOTS OF LIFE IN HOLLYWOOD TO-DAY.

Flamboyant Prints For Dinner Dresses.

(By SHEILAH GRAHAM.)

Flamboyant prints are popular for dinner dresses, and Patricia Morison, Paramount starlet, is tlie possessor of an imported black and white print. Gigantic poppies of black are splashed over the white ground. The dress has a square neckline, short, puffed sleeves and full, circular skirt. The sole jewellery note —a pearl in each ear —and a two-pearl ring.

French flannel in stripes of grey and wine makes the house-coat worn by Ilka Cliase in a recent picture. Dramatic contrast is achieved by a wide girdle of Kelly green. The single lapel is also in the bright green. Worn over a stiff green taffeta petticoat, the extremely "new" garment is buttoned with two pearl discs.

A day in the country is best enjoyed wearing cool, fresh gingham. Very attractive is Rosalind Russell's "farm frock" of grey and red gingham with full, gathered plaid skirt and matching waist-length slip-on bolero. For the evening the star slips on a hand-knit heavy ribbed sweater of royal blue with oversized hooks and eyes in natural coloured wood.

Gloria Dickson dines at the Biltmore Bowl wearing a formal gown of linen, striped in black, chartreuse, beige and white design on a deep natural linen ground. The frock has a wide, billowing skirt, the hemline edged with a ruffle of fine black cotton lace and velvet bows, which also make up the unusual bodice. Four jet bracelets and jet flower in her hair, chartreuse linen sandals and a quilted fingertip jacket in black linen are the rest of Miss Dickson's adornment.

Virginia Bruce drew lots of oohs and ahs at a recent social affair when she arrived in a black crepe dinner gown cut on princess lines, with a three-inch width of white organdie ruffle outlining the heart-shaped bodice and appearing again below the hemline of the flared skirt. Matching elbow-length gloves in the black crepe repeated the crisp ruffle. Her blonde curls were swept off her face and caught at the nape of the neck with a black velvet ribbon.

The whirling skirts of the new gipsy dresses call for appropriate footwear, says Hedy Lamarr, whose particular type of beauty is ideal for both. With her chartreuse and wine-striped chiffon dance frock, the lovely star wears evening boots of chartreuse satin, folded and tied in back with a tailored bow. The wedge sole is of soft kid and studded with rhinestone nailheads.

After culottes for sports wear come culottes for dressy occasions. Warners' ace designer has planned for Gloria Holden a very full pair, with the new 16-inch skirt length, made of gaily printed floral crepe and teamed with a shirred white voile baby blouse buttoning in back. A divided petticoat of white handkerchief linen, edged with three rows of narrow ruffles, gives the "pants" that old-fashioned look.

A new novelty belt, very convenient, is the inspiration of Mary Beth Hughes. The belt is of beige with hand-knitted turquoise, cerise and fuchsia designs. (The same design also appears on the collar and sleeves of her dress.) The buckle, made of burnt wood, is a compact. By pressing the sides of the three-inch square, the top opens, revealing lip stick, rouge and powder. The compact is removable and can be attached to any belt.

Popularity of the brushed angora wool bolero has been followed with matching skirts in the fuzzy yarn. Mary Howard, Metro actress, has knitted a summer ensemble in lemon yellow with the skirt made on the flared skating lines. With the wool bolero and skirt, Miss Howard wears a blouse of sheer tucked chiffon in a very pale shade of chartreuse.
