65 YEARS WED.
EPSOM COUPLE.
ANNIVERSARY ON MONDAY. Sixty-five years married! That is the wonderful record of Captain and Mrs. J. Corbett-Scott, two residents of Epsom, who on Monday will celebrate the anniversary of their wedding at Tuakau in 1574.
Captain Corbett-Scott was 100 years of age on April 16 last, and both he and his wife will be the recipients of many congratulations on the occasion of their jubilee. The couple after their marriage lived at Pukekohe, Hawera and Mount Eden. They then settled in Epsom, where they have resided for 39 years.
Captain Corbett-Scott is one of the best-known surviving veterans of the Maori A\ ar, and was among those who took part in the famous defence of the Pukekohe East Church ir. 1863. The attacking Maori party consisted of about 200, and relief came to the defenders from Lieutenant Grierson and 32 men of the 70th Regiment, who had come from Ramarama. Later Captain Moir came on the scene with three wagons of ammunition. A company of 150 soldiers led by Captain Inman and Captain Saltmarclie subsequently charged the invaders, and after an hour of fighting succeeded in driving off the Maoris. The British suffered three killed or mortallv wounded in the final charge, but not a man inside the stockade was struck bv a bullet.
