CLAIMS FOR FIRST MONTH.
MATERNITY DISBURSEMENTS
Hospital benefit claims on the social security fund in the Auckland and Thames-Tauranjra health districts for July, the first month in which the benefits were payable, amounted to about £11.300. Of this sum substantially more than half was claimed by the Auckland Hospital Board, which applied for £GG.">7 in respect of its main hospital and several comparatively small amounts fur its other institutions, at all of which treatment is now free of cost to patients.
Private hospital claims, at the -ate of 41/ a day for each patient, amounted to a total of £1296 for the two health districts, this being the extent to which patients in private institutions were assisted in meeting their expenses for treatment.
Disbursements from the social security fund to pay for maternity benefits, which were introduced on May 15, now excecd £5468 for the two districts, this amount Jncluding £4416 paid to hospital authorities, £1031 to obstetric nurses and £21 to medical practitioners who contracted to provide doctors' services
