CUBANS ELIMINATED FROM THE DAVIS CUP.
AUSTRALIA WINS EASILY. FOUR GAMES LOST IN DOUBLES YUGOSLAVS NEXT OPPONENTS. CRecelvp<l 11 n.m.) NEW YORK, August 11. When the Australians beat the Cubans at Seabright in straight sets in the doubles to-day, in the American /.one final of the Davis Cup, the Commonwealth players qualified to meft Yugoslavia in the interzone final at Jioston Ironi August '24 to 26. The score was: —Quiet and Bromwich b»at Morales and Nod arse, <s—l,5 —1, 6 —o. 6 —3. The Australians ("early outclassed the Cubans, although the games frequently went to deuce, due chiefly to Bromwich's inability to make the winning shot. Bromwich outed and netted too often, thus forcing Qui.st, who was in his beet form, to carry the brunt of the rubber. The Cubans, wno are just average players, without any outstanding strokes, seemed to have no plan of attack and they scored almost entirely on Australian, errors. In the first set Morales held his service in the first game. The Australians took the rest fairly easily, although five went to deuce. Quist made the majority of the ■points. After a long opening piinc in the second set. in -which Bromwich finally held his service in a IG-poitit* tussle, the Australians raced through the next five games, losing only seven points. Bromwich was erratic at the net, but Quist smashed well. In tho final set tho Cubans rallied and held their services consecutively for the first time in the rubber. A break came in the sixth game, when Bromwich woke up and blasted two beautiful double-handed shots for placements to break Morales' service. This gave the Australians ;i lead. Nodarse lield his service in the eighth to give the Cubans their third game.
As the Australians won the first two singles on Thursday the match is already over.
Nodarse, the Cuban captain, expressed the opinion that Bromwich will have to improve his overhead play if Australia expects to win the cup. It was too weak to-day.
Government Aid for Yugoslavia. The United States Lawn Tennis Association has just received a cablegram stating that the ugoslavs are coming to America next week, thus ending fears of their defaulting in the inter-zone final owing to lack of funds to make tho trip. (The Yugoslavian Lawn Tennis Association last week called on the Government of the country for financial assistance to the extent of £9,50.)
H. O. Hopman, flip Australian captain, stated: ''We are glad that the Yugoslavs are coming. We should be able to beat them, but they will furnish the type of competition we lieed to get our boys in the best shape for the challenge round against United States, at Philadelphia, from September 2 to 4."
